We are pleased to share with you our Ofsted report from the inspection carried out at Melbourne Infants on 12th and 13th May 2026.

The Ofsted framework recently changed; from one overall judgement, to grades across seven areas – where schools must securely meet every criteria in the grade.  A short video from Ofsted explaining the new framework to parents/carers can be found below:

Melbourne Infant School has been rated as meeting the expected standard across all areas of the Ofsted framework.  This means, in Ofsted’s view, the school is doing everything it should be doing; making sure our children are receiving everything they need and deserve.

We are very proud of this outcome, which recognises the hard work of every member of our school team.  We are pleased that the inspection team saw first-hand how welcoming and happy our school is, and recognised our strong relationships with our children and families.

We are particularly proud of the following points in the report:

  • Pupils are proud of their welcoming and happy school - staff get to know pupils very well and treasure them;
  • The school prioritises pupil’s wellbeing - pupils enjoy attending school and are rarely absent;
  • Pupils, including disadvantaged pupils, develop well the key foundations for future learning - the “fascinating” curriculum is well-considered and delivered well by knowledgeable staff;
  • The school engages with parents and carers especially well;
  • Pupils talk about the importance of treating everyone fairly, regardless of their faith, culture or disability;
  • Pupils behave well and have no worries about bullying or unkind behaviour because it is rare; and develop a sound understanding of right and wrong;
  • Pupils benefit from a wide range of memorable opportunities to broaden their horizons;
  • In Early Years, staff establish nurturing relationships with children, giving them the confidence to enjoy school and provide many interesting activities for children to learn a range of skills; engaging children’s enthusiasm and imagination.

The report also highlighted some areas that the school is already working on, at pace, to strengthen.  We welcome this feedback in order to make our school an even better place for our children.  These areas include:

  • Improving how we set and review – in conjunction with parents/carers – precise targets for children with special educational needs;
  • Implementing new methods of monitoring consistency;
  • Sharpening monitoring and evaluation of teaching; with a focus on consistency against our marking and development policy for spelling and handwriting in particular

The report can be accessed in full by clicking or tapping here.

Mrs. Gibbs as Headteacher will be reviewing all of the feedback received over the course of the inspection. This feedback will then be used to create our school improvement plan for the next school year and beyond.
