Melbourne Infant School - Equality Objectives
Melbourne Infant School is dedicated to ensuring that all members of the school community and the wider community are treated equally, fairly, and with respect – by the school, and by each other. This applies to the school as a place of education, a business and an employer.
We welcome our general duty under the Equality Act 2010. The Equality Act 2010 replaced previous anti-discrimination legislation with a single Act. The Equality Duty is set out in section 149 of the Act. It replaces the three previous public sector equality duties – for race, disability and gender – and covers the following protected characteristics:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Marriage and civil partnership (but only in respect of eliminating unlawful discrimination)
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race
- Religion or belief
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
At Melbourne Infant School, our equality objectives are:
1. To ensure our school is a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for every child and family.
In line with our vision and values, we will create an environment where all individuals are valued, diversity is embraced, and STAR potential realised. We will celebrate all backgrounds, cultures and life experiences. We will promote positive behaviour and respectful relationships throughout the school, using our STAR Standards.
2. To remove barriers to learning to help every child “reach for the stars”.
In line with our vision and values, children will access an ambitious, globally diverse, purposeful and creative curriculum where achievement in all areas is celebrated. We will use assessment and monitoring to identify gaps in learning, participation or progress. We will provide appropriate support, adjustments or interventions for children who may face disadvantage or require extra support. We will remove financial barriers for parents/carers as and where needed to ensure that children can participate in a full range of school activities, including trips, events and enrichment opportunities.
3. To ensure that all school policies and practices prevent discrimination and offer a safe, respectful environment for every child.
In line with our vision and values, we will respect ourselves and each other. We aim to eliminate discrimination, promote equality of opportunity and embed an inclusive school culture. We will regularly review our policies to ensure they reflect the Equality Act 2010 requirements, and apply policies and procedures fairly and consistently to protect pupils from discrimination.
